“I’m not going to cry all the time
nor shall I laugh all the time,
I don’t prefer one “strain” to another.”
— Frank O’Hara
It’s Virgo season, and I miss home.
Not the home where I live in Los Angeles, but the home inside my bones.
I miss the cold that anxiously straddles the crisp air. The darkening sunsets in places where we dread winter. Detroit. New York. Chicago — the city from which I write.
It’s a downcast morning, and I’m listening to Philip Glass, thinking of Frank O’Hara.
Forget the Vestal Virgins. If you want to understand the sign of Virgo, retreat to a place of solitude and read Lunch Poems aloud to the ghosts in the room.
I don’t care for much poetry, but Frank O’Hara is everything.
Now the Virgo moon draws the eclipse season, and one set of stories, to a close.
When the moon escapes from the Sun, I’ll be sharing a Venus retrograde offering—an opportunity to write, share mythologies and study the sky together.
In the meantime, I wish you warmth and inspired contemplation —
