In Lieu of Another Unhinged Essay: Planets, Planets, Planets
a few scattered notes on silence and clown photos from the LA Astro Fest
Traditionally, the water signs were considered mute, so Mercury in one of these signs was seen as prone to quietness — or even periods of not speaking at all.
For the latter, astrologers love to cite the example of Maya Angelou, who was born while Mercury in Pisces was traveling through the eighth house of the sky. In the aftermath of a severe trauma, she didn’t speak for five years.
I was born with this same Pisces placement, and while I experienced neither a trauma as severe nor a muteness as prolonged, I was known for not talking as a child. In fact, all the way through high school, many of my classmates and teachers considered me mute.
For someone who hosts a podcast called TalkTalkTalk, this is an admittedly surprising confession.
Anyway, here's the thing: I'm tired. All I want to do is take in my surroundings and spend time with my internal choir of voices, arguing over why this Barbault guy and his big basket talk bother us so much.
In lieu of another unhinged essay, I’m offering something that brings me much joy to consume in silence: photos from the Planets, Planets, Planets performance at this year’s LA Astro Fest by one of my favorite photographers, Victor Curtis.
Planets, Planets, Planets!!!
For the uninitiated, Planets, Planets, Planets is an alt-comedy troupe who performs the chart of the moment. Directed by astrologer and clown Blair Bogin, their shows are both wildly entertaining and uncomfortably personal, the way mushrooms start as a good time and end in existential tears.
Think Orphic mystery rite. But less mysterious. And less Orphic.

The Performance
