The Thief and the Messenger: Mercury’s Descent into the Underworld
As Mercury retraces its steps through Scorpio’s depths, something long buried begins to stir. What was taken, forgotten, or lost may soon resurface.
I was lying awake in a hotel bed along Oregon’s Columbia River, restless from a night of anxious thoughts and the sound of sea lions barking through the dark, when I learned about the Louvre jewelry heist.
Mercury, the Zodiac’s cunning magician, was meeting up with Mars in his clandestine home of Scorpio for a meeting whose minutes may never be made public. Simultaneously, in Paris, thieves used a basket lift and power tools to breach one of the city’s most venerated museums, the Louvre, and made off with priceless jewels in under ten minutes, their stealth mission invisible to the throngs of museum-goers who surrounded them.
The following day, just as I returned home from the Oregon coast, massive server outages at Amazon disrupted communications across the country, affecting companies from The New York Times to Eventbrite.
For several hours, inboxes fell silent, offering a rare reprieve from the constant hum of digital pollution.
DIGGING FOR JEWELS: MERCURY’S DESCENT
On a personal level, I invite you to ask yourself:
What parts of you feel hijacked?
Where have your lines of communication been cut off?
What new ideas or impulses are rising from the unrest?
As of this writing, Mercury has separated from Mars and entered its shadow, the stretch of sky it will soon retrace during its upcoming retrograde. This cycle begins in fiery Sagittarius before diving backward into Scorpio’s dark waters, the domain of secrets, thieves and barking sea creatures.
Pay attention to your surroundings now. You will soon be revisiting this territory.
ANSWERS REVEALED BY THE LIGHT OF THE NEW MOON
On November 19, halfway through its retrograde journey, Mercury meets the Sun at the Scorpio new moon. This moment offers an opportunity to recover something lost, something that comes back covered in dust, buried beneath layers of time and forgetting. It is nothing to fear, what you unearth can now be reintegrated with fresh understanding and purpose.
What haunts you, consciously or not, is preparing to speak. Your task this month is to let yourself descend into the water and take note of what you find there.
If you are quiet, if you are listening, Mercury’s message will become clear. It is time to identify your thieves, release old regrets, and make peace with what has been taken so that a new story can emerge… one unburdened by the past.
In the meantime, I wish you safe travels through this retrograde season.
May your lost jewels find their way back to you.
If this season has stirred something below the surface, a reading can help you name it, understand it, and find its place in your story again. Let’s uncover what this Mercury cycle wants to show you.
